Our first flight with our son was when he was 3 months old, the flight time was 4 hours one way. We have since then traveled internationally and domestically with him and picked up some tips along the way to share!
Here is a simple check list to help get you started:
- Carrier- we have a LÍLLÉbaby complete all seasons carrier that we use when walking around town. For the airport/plane we use KeaBabies baby wrap carrier which is perfect for getting through airport security!
- Lightweight & easy to fold stroller- we use our Zoe Tour+ stroller, and yes we actually fit it in the overhead compartment on an Airbus 350-1000. It has also fit on buses, trains, and taxis.
- Collapsible wash basin- this is extremely important for washing baby bottles and pump parts!
- Travel size bottle brush & dryer rack/towels- again, super helpful when washing bottles and pump parts. We purchased the OXO Tot Travel Size Bottle Drying Rack & Brush
- Diapers, wipes, changing pad, diaper cream, change of clothes, bib, burp cloth- the typical diaper bag essentials, plus a wet bag for any big accidents to keep dirty clothes separate.
- Baby bottles- for feeding and for popping their ears during take-off/landing
- If they are eating solids, bring lots of snacks and a water bottle.
- Container for breastmilk or cow’s milk- for long flights we needed to keep milk cold and the CERES CHILL has worked amazing for us, keeps up to 24 oz of milk chilled for 20+ hours!
- Pacifiers- if your baby uses one for soothing and you can have them suck on one during take off & landing on the airplane instead of nursing or feeding with a bottle.
- Favorite toy or a new toy- especially if they do not give attention to a screen for a long period of time. At least one or two toys is a must!
- Sound machine- super helpful for getting them to sleep on the airplane and at the hotel or other accommodation.
- Blankets- we all know the airplane can get a little chilly.
Some research to do for accommodations at your destination :
- Can they provide a pack and play playard?
- Is there a refrigerator in the room to store milk? *Two out of the three hotels we had stayed at in the London and Scotland did not have refrigerators, but did provide us a bucket of ice*
- Location! If you are walking a lot, look into how far everything is or if you’re using public transportation research where stations and bus stops are.
- Will they allow early check-in if possible?
